Young Lawyers For the Rule of Law in the Americas, a CAROLA and LALP Program

The Center for the Advancement of the Rule of Law in the Americas at Georgetown Law (CAROLA) and the Latin America Leadership Program at Georgetown University (LALP) present an innovative virtual program for young lawyers with a vocation and commitment to promoting the Rule of Law in the Americas.

The Young Lawyers For the Rule of Law in the Americas Program brings together a cadre of 40 young lawyers with diverse backgrounds from the region with a vocation to advance the Rule of Law in their home countries and commitment to regional collaboration, cross-sectoral engagement, and creative problem-solving.

The program seeks to equip young lawyers with analytical frameworks and tools to analyze the state of the Rule of Law at the national, regional, and hemispheric levels, identify successful home-grown reforms that achieved sustainability, discern the conditions to make their institutions more accountable, and design rule of law reforms that are fair, inclusive and sustainable.

Program Objectives

1. Context: Understand the challenges of the Rule of Law at the national and hemispheric levels. Analyze current problems and promote collaboration between actors from different sectors through case studies to offer possible solutions.
2. Tools: Obtain new tools and knowledge on topics such as international investment law, business, human rights and sustainability, migration, and drug policy, among others.
3. Innovation: Identify successful local reforms, discern the conditions for institutions to be more transparent, collaborate with colleagues from other countries and different sectors, and design reform alternatives that are fair, inclusive, and sustainable.
4. Leadership: Strengthen leadership skills at the individual level to promote agents of change with the capacity for dialogue for greater social impact.
