Entwined: A Double Feature

A collage of images including concert performances and portraits of Falla and Garcia Lorca

Georgetown University's Latin America Leadership Program joins Post-Classical Ensemble and major institutions including SPAIN arts & culture and Georgetown Americas Institute to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Manuel de Falla’s seminal chamber opera, “El Retablo de Maese Pedro."

A special highlight of these celebratory events, which span the week of April 17 through April 22, 2023, and a range of disciplines such as literature, theater, music, heritage, and public diplomacy, is "Entwined: A Double Feature" directed by Georgetown University's Orchestra Director Angel Gil-Ordoñez.

The April 19 performance at the Kennedy Center featured the world premiere of Derek Goldman’s new performance piece about the friendship between poet Federico García Lorca and composer Manuel de Falla. Goldman is also the Director of The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University. In the second half of our double feature, Angel Gil-Ordoñez conducted Falla’s opera El Retablo de Maese Pedro (Master Peter’s Puppet Show). In this collaboration with visual artist Kevork Mourad, puppets are replaced by animation synced with the score performed by PostClassical Ensemble. This performance marks the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Manuel de Falla’s seminal chamber opera, which premiered in concert version in Seville in March 1923 and was staged on June 25, 1923, in Paris. The Post-Classical Ensemble musical program features the collaboration of Flamenco artists, renowned actors, soloists and the collaboration with the visual artist Kevork Mourad.
