On Wednesday, April 12,  the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) hosted an event in Riggs Library featuring Mexican Ambassador Gerónimo Gutiérrez. Recently appointed Mexico’s ambassador to the United States, this was Ambassador Gutiérrez’s first address to a public audience. His talk centered on the current state of bilateral relations between the United States and Mexico.

The evening began with general remarks about the development of the bilateral relationship in the past century, with special attention given to the implementation of NAFTA since 1994. The remarks and the Q&A session that followed touched on topics such as economic development, combatting organized crime, and immigration concerns.

Fr. Matthew Carnes, S.J., director of the Center for Latin American Studies, introduced Ambassador Gutiérrez and moderated the conversation.

This event was sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies, the Latin America Initiative, and the Latin America Leadership Program.
