On September 19, Georgetown Americas Institute (GAI) Founding Director Alejandro Werner and Sergio Díaz-Granados, the executive director of the CAF – Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), signed a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) that promotes cooperation on research, exchanges, and events between both institutions. The MOU was signed at CAF’s “Latin America and the Caribbean Working on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” conference in New York.

Following this new agreement, GAI and CAF will work together to facilitate cooperation on research and academic events addressing issues of regional significance. The MOU also lays the groundwork for future collaboration on policy events, student engagement, and working groups.

“The exchange and generation of knowledge on factors critical to the development of Latin America are part of CAF’s mandate. That is why cooperating with research centers and universities allows us to deepen our commitment with quality education and the formation of our future regional professionals.” – Sergio Díaz-Granados

At the ceremony, Werner explained that one of the pillars of GAI’s work is the exchange of knowledge with regional institutions to better public policies in their countries. He also highlighted the importance of CAF’s new role as “a great ally for Georgetown University in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Through funded projects in 2021, the bank extended clean running water to 2.8 million people, installed telecommunications infrastructure that benefitted 30 million people, and supported over 300,000 students through educational projects and initiatives. GAI and CAF are pleased to partner to further shared goals.
