The Georgetown Americas Institute, ICESI University, and the Stone Center for Research on Wealth Inequality at the University of Chicago are pleased to present the Summer School on Socioeconomic Opportunity and Inequality, which will take place August 24-26, 2026, on the campus of ICESI University in Cali, Colombia.

The course seeks to provide the next generation of scholars with the multidisciplinary underpinning necessary for effective research on inequality dynamics.

It will feature leading scholars tackling inequality research from the lens of economics, sociology, and public policy, to foster cross-disciplinary approaches and public policy evaluation regarding long-term inequality issues. It will train advanced M.A. and Ph.D. students, policy professionals, and early-career faculty through immersive lectures on state-of-the-art methods. One-on-one and small-group meetings with senior researchers, and presentation opportunities for summer school students will allow students to receive input on their early-stage research. The summer school is designed to yield long-term benefits in creating lasting intellectual links that can be pursued long after the conclusion of the meetings.

  • Inequality, Structural Change, and Long-Term Development in Latin America
  • The Geography of Social Mobility in Developing Countries
  • Econometrics Tools for Evaluating Functionals of Interest in Evaluating Intergenerational Mobility
  • A Trajectory-Based Approach to Measuring Intergenerational Mobility
  • Social Dissent, Coercive Capacity, and Redistribution
  • Meritocracy
