A Conversation with Alejandro Oxenford, Ambassador of Argentina in the United States

President Trump Meets Argentina President Javier Milei

As part of its Ambassador Series, the Georgetown Americas Institute is pleased to welcome His Excellency Alejandro Oxenford, ambassador of Argentina to the United States, for a wide-ranging conversation with Ambassador Andres Duran, former ambassador of Uruguay in the United States, on Argentina’s evolving relationship with Washington at a time of global and regional transformation.

Under the Javier Milei administration, Argentina is pursuing an ambitious agenda of macroeconomic stabilization, market reforms, and international reintegration. With inflation declining and growth resuming, the government seeks to expand trade, attract long-term U.S. investment, and deepen cooperation across strategic sectors—from energy and critical minerals to innovation and finance.

Following President Javier Milei’s October 2025 visit to the White House and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent’s announcement of an expanded U.S.-Argentina currency swap agreement from $20 billion to $40 billion, Ambassador Oxenford will reflect on Argentina’s strategic priorities vis-à-vis the United States, opportunities for collaboration in areas such as energy security, critical minerals, and infrastructure, and the country’s vision for its regional and global role as it repositions within South America and the broader international system. The discussion will also explore how Buenos Aires balances relations with major powers, including the United States and China, and the implications for Latin American integration and the global energy transition.
